A little rain started our trek from Sodus to Boonville, New York today but the rain didn't last long at all. We pedaled for ten hours and covered 113.1 miles. That took a big chunk out of the remaining mileage of the ride. We have six days of pedaling left and hope to be on the beach next Saturday . . . the beach at the Atlantic Ocean!
Our ride today was very hilly. We arrived in Boonville tired but very pleased to have pedaled what will most likely be our last century of the trip.
At Bonnie Castle Farm Bed & Breakfast, Georgia Pendleton made breakfast for us before we began riding. Georgia has lived in that house since 1963 when she, her husband Eric, and their children moved in from Long Island. They wanted to raise their children away from the big city. Seems to me like they made a fantastic choice.
At lunch time we found ourselves in Mexico (New York). Going out of town we noticed Pelican Pam's Subs & Salads. We gave it a try and found the food to be very, very good. We met Pam, Cynthia, and Laurel and found them to be very friendly and fun. We talked about the trip and how the most fun has been meeting the people along the way.
Jonathan, who almost always orders a meatball sub when given the opportunity, ordered one at Pelican Pam's. After he finished he told Pam and Laurel, "This is the best meatball sub I have ever eaten. I want two more but don't have any room for them." I had the Chicken Ceasar Salad with great tasting chicken. It was pretty big. I could not eat all of it.
Supper was at a small drive-in in Boonville. The interior is another one of those interiors that would make a great student ministry hang out: lots of Coke stuff and fifties memorabilia including the tables and booths.
Tonight our residence is the Headwaters Motor Lodge. Margaret gives it a low score on her motel scale and would not stay here again. Of course, it's the only place in Boonville so we really didn't have much choice. The good thing: after we fall asleep we won't know where we are anyway!
Jonathan and I were quite amused when we saw a road sign with a question mark. All we had to do was turn right and we would have been headed to ?. Reminds me of the folks who don't know where they're going. Any road will get them there, even ?.
Lots of folks never think about where they're going for eternity but ? won't cut it! Eternity is one of those things a person had better know and be sure about. You don't get a second chance once you're there.
Jesus was talking to his disciples one day about the way to the Father. The disciples just didn't get it at times and this was one of those times. Jesus told them, "Don't be troubled. You must trust God, now trust in me. There are many rooms in my Father's home, and I am going to prepare a place for you. If this were not so, I would tell you plainly. When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. And you know where I am going and how to get there."
"No, we don't know, Lord," Thomas said. "We haven't any idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?"
Jesus told him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me" (John 14:1-6).
Whether you're pedaling across America or headed for eternity, ? isn't the way you want to go. Not everybody is pedaling across America but everybody is headed for eternity. Do you know the Way? Are you sure?
Turn right at ? and go three miles? Foolish.

  3. I think you are insane for not following the ? sign. That would have been a high priority for me if I was with you and I would have made you turn and follow it to see what happened. What if the aliens who stole shoes and threw them over power lines from back in Minnesota or "Idaho" or wherever it was were waiting there? What if there was a rock quarry, but instead of rocks, it was a big pit of quarters? Maybe there is a pancake the size of Rhode Island if you follow that sign. It could have been a lost prehistoric world of dinosaurs and vernicious knids. I am disappointed in your lack of exploratory spirit.
